Smallhouse Log

Wednesday, first week, Spring Quarter

Despite being laid low by illness, I have managed to remain excited about video games. Played a lot of Dwarf Fortress, played a lot of Minecraft (and who isn't?), and I even played a little L'Abbaye des Morts.

Still have not finished Herakleophorbia, though.

And even though I don't have an XBox and won't be able to play it, I'm looking forward to Fez. It's pretty and interesting looking! But probably not quite worth getting an XBox for.

But maybe in combination with all those other games not ported to PC....

7DRL Challenge, day eight

Herakleophorbia: Failure!

Technically, I still have about 25 more hours, but I know I won’t finish in time. I might be able to have a working roguelike, but not one worth playing, so I’m going to call it now, play the successes, and enjoy the weekend.

Thanks for the support, everyone! I think I’ll try again next year, by which time I may have some more experience in RL design and programming, and hopefully more free time. Good luck to those still working!

7DRL Challenge, day six

The last two days have been slow going, with issues other than work getting in the way. I think I actually got more done on Tuesday, when I worked a double, than on Wednesday, when I had a short shift. I'm calling off my second shift today, but not in order to work on Herakleophorbia. While I have it off anyway, though, I hope to use the time coding.

Exploration and basic critters, object handling are in. The rest of today: Combat. And if I have time, inventory. That shouldn't take too much time, since it is simplified by design - you only get one sword and one suit of armor, and if you want them enchanted, you'd better be ready to do it yourself!

In the game, I mean. I'll do the programming. Hopefully, before Sunday morning.

7DRL Challenge, day three

After switching from rapid development on another project to a more cautious attempt at my first roguelike to working three day jobs and barely coding, I decided to do the 7DRL. Starting late due to computer issues, I began at 8:30 this morning, trying to blitz through the python / libtcod tutorial as a jumping-off point. Since I only worked one shift today, I was able to get about a third of the way through, but I'm finding it a bit obtuse. Tomorrow I work a double, but I hope to get back on pace Wednesday.

With graphics, movement, and generation down, I feel good about my chances of finishing something by Sunday. I just have one question: Is anyone else constantly interrupted by a desire to go play other roguelikes?

one week later, Thursday

I spent a lot of time on and in roofs today; a lot of time, that is, relative to the usual amount of time I spend in a day on or in roofs. Rooves? That looks weird. Roofs. Hmm.

The reason for this being, I left my keys in my pyjama pants this morning and went to work without them. Unable to lock my bike up once I got to Hyde Park, I was forced to pursue... other options. In the end, this led to me crouching along in the rafters above the third floor theatre in Ida Noyes Hall, the one with the Masque of Youth mural. The rafters, alarmingly, were brick and cement. I walked around a bit, but it wasn't quite as exciting as I'd always hoped -and by always, I mean "for the past eight years", that being how long ago I first noticed this particular trapdoor. I mean, it's no Harper sub-basement.

It was also curiously easy to crawl around on the roof of Haymarket. Go figure.

Thursday

And Milleverbium! One thousand words, one picture, one hundred lines of bug-free code (and associated documentation), or one hundred lines of decent poetry. Or some combination, at the appropriate exchange rates.

Wary of my past failures (and how ridiculously intense a thousand words a day is as a goal), I think I'll ramp into it gradually. Say, two hundred each day for the first week, and up the quota by another hundred each week. Which should take me eight weeks to get up to a proper thousand? That seems possible?

Now to just set a start date.

The search for alternate calendars continues. Suggestions are welcome.

Projects are afoot. Doing taxes. Unpacking, packing. Diverf seamster operations. And possibly... the Seven-Day Roguelike Challenge. I've got some ideas brewing (admittedly, fueled by discussions on the Brogue forums). And it looks like I totally missed Hourly Comics Day this year? I've been busy. But not busy with projects. But now I will be. Maybe.

One of my projects is to make a database (with corresponding web interface) to keep track of my projects.
